Quiltmania mystery quilt - a start

I have jumped into Quiltmania magazine's 2023 mystery quilt!  It is called Mathilde and designed by Susan Smith (I love her quilts).  There will be six installments over this year.

Part one - in the 2023 Jan/Feb issue - a bunch of 4-inch sawtooth stars, and four of these cute appliqué blocks.  I'm about halfway done.

I am using a piece of Japanese fabric for the stars and hopefully for other elements of the quilt too.

Have you made Mystery Quilts?  It takes a leap of faith.

We went over to Kaela's for the Super Bowl.  Charlotte and I made Rice Krispie Treats.  Most of the marshmallows made it into the pot;).

We also visited David's brother and sister in law Jon and Dottie in their beautiful new home in the North Carolina countryside.  Dottie and I have shared a love of quilting for many years.  We pin basted two of her quilts, including her Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt.   We contemplated whether either one of us would ever make another EPP hexie quilt.  The jury is still out on that one.

I am listening to the second Thursday Murder Club installment, The Man Who Died Twice.  It is SO good, if you like cosy mysteries.  Beautifully read by Lesley Manville.

  1. This is me, Elizabeth (Blogger isn't playing nice for some reason). I was half-tempted to do Susan's mystery, as I love her, too. Your blocks are really motivating me on that idea. Agree, though, that it takes a leap of farther.
Fun to see you with your grandkids (how did the twins get so big?), and that is a lovely shot of pinning the quilt.

  4. I've seen several starts on this mystery. Each person pulling from their stash and using their favorites. Your Japanese fabrics will definitely highlighted.

  5. I don't do mystery projects anymore, tho a S Smith one is tempting. Yours will be lovely.

Adorable grandbabies, how they have grown already. Such a joy.

  7. Your star blocks are gorgeous, that is a beautiful Japanese feature fabric. Several of my blogging friends are doing this mystery so watching each of them evolve is going to be great fun. No mysteries for me anymore, was burned once and now I need to see the finished quilt before devoting time and fabric. Sweet family photos, you're fortunate to have a sister-in-law who also loves quilting.

  8. I like your fabric choices for the mystery quilt - great start! If I were ever inclined to try a mystery quilt, something by Susan Smith would probably be a good bet. However, I have too much else going on right now and will enjoy watching this one from the sidelines. Great photo with the beautiful granddaughters!!

  12. That Japanese print for the star blocks are wonderful. It must be so fun to make a mystery quilt.
Even more enjoyable is to make treats with a lovely little granddaughter.

  13. I love that you are using hat Japanese print on the stars of the mystery.
Mysteries are something I only do in doll quilt size, and I don't even do those very often. You are brave, but if it is a designer you know you love, then it makes sense.
Cute, cute photos with the wee ones.
I can honestly say that if I ever finish the current hexie project that has been ongoing for about 9 years (my first one took over 20 years to finish), I will NOT be starting another.

  14. The mystery is going to be such a beautiful quilt. You've made an excellent start. Basting is not for the faint of heart and you did two of them? I am amazed. Wish you lived next door, I'd put you to work.

  15. I've not seen Quiltmania around here and not even our library has it. I'm not big on mystery quilts but from what I see of Susan's work, it will be wonderful.
The tiny stars and the applique look delightful.
Sweet little Charlotte. Little ones love marshmallows, don't they--especially the miniature ones that are just bite-size for them?
It must be fun to have a relative who enjoys quilting, too.

  16. So much fun to start a new quilt. This is looking great! I haven't done a mystery quilt in years and years, don't think I have the right mentality for it anymore. Sounds like you're really settling well into life back now that you're back in the states. Nothing quite like good family bonds.:)

  17. I have made one mystery quilt with Bonnie Hunter and it was great fun though more ORANGE than I'd planned for. If I'd known ahead of time I might have chosen different colors.

That Grandmother's Garden quilt is going to be an heirloom! A lot of work but it will be appreciated for generations!
