Boro-inspired Mini finish and grandbaby Charlotte

Hello hello from sunny Austin TX.  I've been here a week, and it's heaven to be with my first grand baby, Charlotte Jane.  Our very first selfie attempt:

It is just so fun to be here, in their busy young household.  Seeing my "baby" being a mother really is such a huge thrill!  Kaela making waffles Sunday morning:

I'm helping Kaela get organized in their new home, and soaking up every minute with Charlotte!  Big happy smiles and she's finding her voice too - it's so cute!

Oh ya, quilting;).

Here's my mini for September, finished a few weeks ago.  I used all scraps from mask-making  (Japanese fabrics, and Liberty), against an indigo background.

Thank you for bringing us all together, Wendy, to share our little creations.  Wendy will list us on her blog The Constant Quilter  here.

This one was pure play.  I used a little glue to collage my pieces onto a piece of good indigo, and then quilted vertical lines in narrow rows, to secure it all down.

I included a couple of sashiko  momiji (maple leaves) for fall.  These little leaves are from Susan Briscoe's book Simple Sashiko.

I think this mini will always remind me of making masks.  Actually it signals the end of my mask making career, or at least a healthy pause.  They are easy to find now, in stores and online.  Somehow the thought of never making another mask, is so freeing.

  2. Hi! I am so happy that you are there in with Charlotte and your family, finally. Charlotte is such a pretty and smiling little girl. And your daughter, too, looks wonderfully happy. Enjoy every moment.

Your little quilt is delightful. I too hope I never have to make another mask, what a horrible chore that was.

  10. Love your mini, and I'd like to find a way to make a quilt that reminds me of covid, but more about the experience, not the deaths (is that possible)? This may be the way.

Love seeing these photos of you with your granddaughter! Yippee! You made it to the US! Such a cutie, and love seeing your daughter, too. Have fun!

  11. Oh that beautiful baby!!! She is so sweet and it is so great to see you with her. I know you are enjoying every moment with her. Kaela looks radiant. Motherhood agrees with her! Your mini is amazing. You have inspired me to try making a boro. I particularly like the fact that this one will always remind you of what we have all endured during this pandemic. I have linked you into today's post. Enjoy those hugs and kisses!!

I really love your little piece. What a great composition and the pops of pumpkin work so well. The sashiko adds another element of interest.
I had no idea you were such a great art quilter!
That bow on Charlotte is ADORABLE. I'd be holding her and kissing her constantly and the pups are sweet too.
    Soak it all up!

  15. What a wonderful post! I so envy you! Do you think waiting to see Charlotte until she is this big was a plus? The reason I’m asking is I can’t decide if I want to see my first grandchild just after he is born (in December) or if I should wait a couple months... my daughter is pushing for a December visit.

You indigo collage is just beautiful too. It will be a happy memory of mask making during the trying times of the pandemic.

  22. Pure bliss!!! How wonderful to be with your family. Love the baby pictures - there's nothing more beautiful than a baby's smile! Also love your mini!!! It's inspiring me to think about looking through my Japanese fabrics and start something using them :):)

  23. I'm so happy you're able to be there in Texas with Charlotte and the rest of her family. What a treat for you to get to meet her in person and hold and play with her. She's adorable!
Your mini is fun, especially the colors you chose. I didn't make many masks, didn't enjoy the process at all, and I'll be glad when we don't have to wear them again!
Safe travels to you whenever you head back to Japan.

  25. Somehow I missed this. Yay, you finally made it to the States! How fun to see your granddaughter, who is a doll! I love the selfie. Love your mini too, which is a great way to commemorate all the masks you made. I want to try that boro technique, maybe with some of my vintage scraps.
