Soft Quilt sort-of finish...

Reached the next level of my Soft Quilt for Hard Times.

I piece a large quilt this way - in four sections, then two, then one:

I used Dream Cotton Request (lowest loft) batting.  Stitched in the ditch just around the blocks.

I had some of this soft pink/cream left over from another quilt - I love a striped binding:

I'm tacking back the binding now.  Then I will add some simple hand quilting to each block.  Eighty blocks.  Two blocks per day, forty days?  I can try.  I am certainly home.... a lot.

I love binding a quilt early - so that I can use and enjoy it while I finish the quilting.

Rainy gray day in Tokyo.  Sometimes I get a hankering for these yummy nutty chocolate chip cookie bars, so easy and simple:

Combine in a bowl with a wooden spoon:

1 stick butter (113 grams) melted
3/4 C brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1 C flour
1/2 C oats (I use quick cooking)
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 C chocolate chips - I use a little less
1 C chopped pecans - I use a little more

Spread into an 8"x8" pan lined with parchment paper.

Bake at 350 about 20 min.  (160 degrees C in my little Japanese convection oven).
Let cool in pan.  Remove, cut into bars, and try to make them last;).

    1. I just sandwiched the top with batting, and backing, and pin basted like I usually do for machine quilting. Then I machine quilted it minimally (in the ditch) so that everything is held together just fine. Back looks fine!

  3. Lovely quilt; I like the idea of binding it before quilting, must try it sometimes :-)

  4. Your quilt is looking great! I love using stripes for binding too--adds a little more interest to the finished quilt. Those bars look delicious. I'm saving the recipe as I can't have anything like that right now--trying to lose weight and lower my cholesterol before my doctor appointment next week--lol!

  5. I like the idea of binding before the final bits of hand quilting are completed. In the days before machine quilting when I thread basted I tried it with mixed results, but now with so many quilts ditch quilted by machine prior to hand quilting within the blocks and borders it seems like it would work really well. And yes, I've slept under unfinished quilts a couple times lol! I like the idea of chocolate chip cookies in a large pan rather than all those individual cookies. Faster and easier and less cleanup!

  6. Love the soft look to this quilt. I agree, striped binding is a wonderful touch.:) Totally ignoring your wonderful sounding recipe. Too many lockdown pounds making themselves known already!

  10. The has turned out just beautifully! And a striped binding is a perfect finish.
The cookie bars sound delicious. I have acquired a couple of other recipes for goodies today. There goes my healthy eating plan! LOL

  11. I learn so much from you. I will try your way of assembling the blocks. I have never put the binding on before quilting, maybe I should try that, too!
    Delicious looking baking.

  12. This such a beautiful quilt, Cynthia. The name fits perfectly and it will be such a great memory for having made it during these hard times.
I love striped bindings but I've never made one. I usually cut my bindings off-grain, which means my strips would look more like candy cane stripes. Ones of these days I'll take on a striped binding.

  13. What a great way to take on a big quilt. I LOVE your binding choice. It is just perfect and so pretty. I think striped bindings are always a winner!

  14. Oh, I love your wonderfully scrappy quilt and the name is perfect as is the striped binding. I like the idea of machine and hand quilting but have never even thought to bind a quilt before hand quilting on it. I think that's an excellent idea.

I haven't had a cookie bar in a loooooong time. Oh, those look so good. Too hot to bake here these days.

  15. Oh yum, I love a melt and mix recipe, so fast and easy, I think I will be trying this recipe out sometime this week. I have bound a couple of quilts before they are finished, I had entered them into a show and wanted to have a finished quilt to show (even though all the quilting might not have been completed)

  16. Yum! Those cookies look so good!

I've never put binding on before a quilt is finished but since some of the quilt is already machine quilted that sounds like a good idea! In just a few of my recent quilts I've mixed hand and machine quilting and once the quilt is done one can hardly notice the difference!
