tentatively venturing out...

Well another week has gone by.  Tokyo is opening up a little, which is a good feeling.  We continue to be cautious, but we've gone out for meals a couple of times.  And,  I did venture out to the fabric store Yuzawaya, where, apparently, it is now ALL about making masks:

Liberty is expensive but so nice for masks:

I was super careful the whole trip (2 trains, each way, and I didn't touch a single thing the whole time) and of course every single person I saw was also wearing a mask.... but it still felt a little nerve-wracking because the store felt crowded.   I got there and back home as quickly as I could.

I'm not quilting much but here's how my "Soft Quilt for Hard Times" blocks are shaping up:

The very dark bits might be *too* dark.

And yes ongoing mask making, now and then:

Mostly I'm GLUED to FaceTime when the time difference allows.  Baby Charlotte on the quilt I made for her.  Melt my heart!  I'm a Grandma!  It's a total thrill.  I thought I'd spell it Gramma  and be called Gram but I just think now, Grandma, and maybe things will evolve.

  2. Hey sweet Grandma!! Love seeing your little girl on her quilt -- her expression is priceless and look how she's already filling a 2+ blocks!! Those log cabins will be a great way to measure her growth. Enjoy Face Time - you will be holding her soon!!

  3. Oh my goodness--Charlotte is beyond adorable! It's interesting that the shop is all about masks, but I imagine they have gained customers that don't quilt, yet need fabric for masks. I've noticed more people seem to be coordinating their masks to go with what they are wearing--I may need to rethink my mask fabric choices--lol!

  4. OMG Charlotte is an angel~ wow such a pretty little face. Incredible photo on your quilt. Looks like it should be in a baby magazine or a quilt magazine :)
amazing how into the masks they are. have to admit they are lovely! I'm glad you are getting out a little and being safe.
Your quilt blocks are looking great and I like the dark fabrics. They sparkle.

  5. I'm happy to hear you felt brave enough to venture out - using the train, no less! If anything, I'm more concerned about being out and about as the virus continues unabated here. Welcome Baby Charlotte! Good wishes to you and your family!

  6. We all seem to remain cautious, but it has been nice to venture out as well. Well, yes you should be glued to Facetime. Isn't it great to have that capability!

  7. What an adorable grandbaby. How long before you get to see her in real life? Any idea?
Wow--the fabric store really is about mask making--and that is a lot of mask options!
Around here the percentage in masks may be anywhere from 10% to 50% (on a really good day).

  8. OOh!!! Charlotte is so cute!!! How wonderful! You can't imagine how excited I am for you because I feel for you having all that distance between you! Who ever thought I'd be upset that I live in Japan! I always thought I'd just flit around the world to visit my kids!

We've been out to eat a couple of times and in our countryside there is really no need to be so careful but still... I want to be supportive in heart of all the people who are risking their health every time they even go to work. Keep us posted on that wonderful baby, Grandma! (You're too young for that title...)

  9. Your pink quilt is perfect for Charlotte and she looks so sweet lying on it.
I still find in a little unnerving to go out shopping and being around people. I would find it even more so if I had to ride two buses as you did. Masks, washing hands thoroughly, not touching eyes, nose, mouth are probably the best things we can do -- probably all things you're doing.
I love your soft quilt for hard times.

  10. I saw you comment on Kathy's blog and thought I would visit and see what you do - your quilt you made for your granddaughter is delightful and the baby too - I would find it hard to not touch anything when traveling on two trains and I applaud you for it! I love seeing face mask kits available I wish more would wear them here.
