baby Charlotte is born!

This week our first grandchild, Charlotte Jane, was born in Austin TX.  We are simply over the moon!  I laughed and cried with joy, at the wonderful news of her birth.

I've been on call almost 24/7 for Facetime, just excited for any glimpse of this little wonder and anxious to give any little advice or encouragement I can offer Kaela.  FaceTime, texting, videos, Marco Polo - it all helps bridge the gap between Tokyo and Austin, but, oh how I long to hold wee Charlotte.

Zero quilting this week.

The shadow side of our joyful week has of course been the dismaying news, day after day, from the U.S.

I'm doing a lot of personal soul searching, reading, listening, reaching that kind of new level of understanding about racism where you realize how little you really know and perhaps how blind you have really been.

I can recommend:  The movie Just Mercy, and learning about the mission of  Equal Justice Initiative.

In other news... here in our little Tokyo bubble.... mmm... David and I went to get lunch at our favorite soup place just a short walk away, for the first time since February.  It felt so amazing to just go do something special, yet normal.

They gave us each a little holder for our masks, for while we ate.  It is a given in Tokyo that everyone wears masks at all times (except for in extreme heat outdoors).  The other change was that now, instead of communal condiments, they gave us each little single portioned condiments.

And, no photo, but our bakery is open again!  The simple pleasures of living here.

  2. Oh my goodness your grandbaby Charlotte is beautiful! I'm sure it's hard not to live closer.
How fun that you were able to go out to eat. We've been out a few times but it's just not the same with all the waiters wearing masks. Still, it's great to get part of the old normal back. That's a beautiful holder for your mask!

  4. Congratulations! Being a grandmother is a joy and you will love it, though sounds like you'll need to be a little patient before you get to see and hold her. Enjoy!

  5. Looks like sweet Charlotte smiled for the camera. I love her dark hair. All my grandkids and kids were bald for the longest time. Congrats to all on that beautiful angel.

  6. She is adorable! How hard to be such a long distance Grandma!
I hear you on the "new level of understanding", and I'm sure I have a long way to go.
It is DH's birthday today, and though we do have a few restaurants open now for dine-in, we have continued to opt for curbside pick-up. Birthday dinner was fresh salmon on the front deck.
I wish it was a given that people would wear masks here. On a good day you might see half of the people in a store wearing masks--but more likely 1/4 or less. How interesting that they have a mask holder for you. Good idea.

  8. Congratulations on your new little darling--she is adorable. It is so exciting...
Glad to hear that you can get out a bit; we are still self-isolating here...we don't feel ready to go out as way too many people don't wear masks or social distance...so we are staying home...
Enjoy your new family member Julierose

  12. What a beautiful granddaughter. Thank goodness for technology that lets us visit safely, hopefully you'll be able to hold her next spring. I wish masks were mandated here in the US.

  13. Charlotte is absolutely beautiful! what a pretty little face. Mom and Dad look so happy too.
Those are great cartoons. Your message is good, let's listen, think, and then lets act in the ways we can.
Masks do save lives good that Japan is mandating them.

  15. It seems that there is a great divide on whether to wear a mask or not here. I was amazed at how many were not wearing them when I did some shopping this week. Charlotte is absolutely adorable! I can understand why you have forgone sewing to keep up with such a special event!

  18. Squeal! Congratulations!! She is absolutely adorable. I know how hard it must be for you to be so far away. Hopefully you will be able to squeeze her little cheeks soon! So happy you were able to finally get out. They have lifted restrictions here in Maine but we have not ventured out yet. Too bad Facetime doesn't have a scent button for that wonderful baby smell! Enjoy the day.

  19. Hi, I'm a reader of your blog here in Brazil! I'm learning English, so I always like to remember that I tend to make mistakes and apologize in advance, in case it happens.
I loved knowing a little more about its culture there in Japan, its daily life etc. I'm already following the blog because I loved the text! Hugs!!

  20. Congratulations! I have been waiting for your big news and knowing how you feel just wanting to be with your new grandchild. (You'll find out why I've been feeling like you when you read my latest blog post). Whoever thought that we wouldn't be able to just get on a plane and be with our families in a few hours...

Yes, the racial discrimination is something I've haven't been in touch about either which is interesting as you would think being bi-racial myself and now having my daughter in a biracial marriage that I might have thought about it more...

These young families, these blessed babies, need all our love and prayers.
