Settling in, in Tokyo

As we begin our first full week in our Tokyo apartment, I am so grateful to have my sewing machine set up - off to the side in our living room!   It's been since we left NH... in March!

We've been in a flurry of setting up household.  So many decisions.  In Japan, you have to buy or lease everything - fridge, washer, curtains, light fixtures.

Furniture, rice cooker, bed, the list goes on.  Decision fatigue.  Learning curves, errands, exhaustion.  I mean, it's sort of fun, too, in a way, to set up an entire household in one fell swoop.  Now just waiting on delivery of a few more things including proper curtains and a bed frame.

It was nice to get our air and sea shipments, to get the rest of our clothes, and to fill our tiny kitchen with some of the things that feel like "home" -

We had about 25 boxes to unpack.  It went fast and the moving company came back after two days to collect the boxes.

The kitchen came with three gas burners, and a fish grill.  It performs beautifully to broil fish (and toast bread!).

Standard Japanese entry way with lots of good storage for shoes and umbrellas:

Kitchen table commandeered for cutting, pressing:

I thought about buying a standing ironing board, but at my height, I think this would be an ergonomic nightmare:

Can you even imagine kneeling to iron?

Anyway, it just feels sooooo good to be set up for quilting again!  Tomorrow we are having a washer/dryer combo unit delivered, and I plan to be a homebody while I wait, and quilt away the time.

  2. I am in awe.
I can't imagine having to choose everything from scratch. Do they have one central online website where you go choose everything, or do you visit a central "rental" place and choose from there. Your home looks great, and no, I can't imagine ironing on my knees!

  3. I pretty sure if I had to iron while kneeling, I would need assistance getting back up! It must be quite an adventure adjusting to another culture, but your home looks wonderful!

  4. I think it would deliver such a sense of calm to finally see my sewing machine set up, I might not mind anything else! What a journey.

  5. No, I can't imagine ironing on my knees, or pinning a quilt on the floor for that matter! After seeing your photos I think we should never take for granted the spaciousness of our homes here in the U.S.

  6. Glad you are getting your new home set up. Interesting way of doing that. Having your own things definitely would make you feel more settled. Importantly you have your sewing station set up. Kneeling to iron? I don't think so.

  7. So glad to hear things are slowly coming to order. Your machine must be happy to be part of the family again. My ironing board is just a covered board I can put on the table or the dog kennel or even the floor ... right now on a laundry basket at knee level. (Glad my knees still work).

  8. So nice when you house is coming together again. At the end of this month I will help my daughter with a baby and a toddler move from Greece to Belgium! The movers will do the packing. We'll do the unpacking! Will be fun with little hands wanting to help!!

  10. I'm so happy to see you set up to sew! Awesome that you have natural light too!
I think all ironing boards lower, but maybe not that far. My knees hurt just seeing that! lol
neat little fish grill. Hanna's new DC apartment has only 2 burners I bet she'd love a fish grill.
Cute entry way. I just love seeing the interiors of your temporary home.

  11. Oh, I am so happy that you now have your machine set up. It's funny how we rely on certain things to make us happy. I haven't done much machine stitching this summer, but I know it is there when I get the urge and that is a comfort! Enjoy your new space!

  12. Your apartment looks comfortable. I know it's great to have a place to call home again where you know you'll be staying for a while. Great window in front of your sewing machine. I can't imagine kneeling to iron. Strong muscles for those who can do it, though. Twenty-five boxes seems so few to hold the things you think you'll most need. Good for you and your husband to manage it!

  13. Oh, what an adventure. I can't imagine having to lease so many things--and all that decision making is definitely a mental drain. So it is good you can get back to fabric therapy with your machine set up. So the fish grill is all the oven you have?

  14. Yay, you are sewing again, and right in front of a window. That's a perfect set up. It all looks very cozy and homey. It's coming along nicely. It's fun to peek into a different living situation. Thanks for sharing the details!
