the essentials

I'm all but finished with my "optional, extra" quilting of the Wandering Way, or Winding Ways.

Grandma Mary Lou loved it:

My Mom loved it and so do I.  It is the one quilt I brought in my luggage and I'm so glad I did.   It has felt like an ESSENTIAL these past three months.

Not perfect.  Soft and functional.  Pure comfort and will only age into more beauty.  So, I count it as wabi sabi.

This shows its true color:

I love my simple needle book from the V&A:

And my little pouch from Gotemba, Japan.  There is something so nice, paring down to really just these few essential tools for hand quilting.

Hazy Tokyo days -

And rainy season has begun -

Fun times recently with dear friends in town for just a couple days ... friendship = essential!

The Shrine in our old neighborhood, Azabu-Juban:

The requisite sushi, and I even liked it:

Who can't use a little gelato at the end of a long Tokyo day?

And one last essential - a HOME.  We have found a permanent apartment, in this building not far from our temporary place, and we will move in first week in July.  Hurray!  So ready to be out of suitcases!

  1. Essentials indeed! That quilt is beautiful and what a lifesaver for you! So happy to hear you have found a place. I'll be thinking of you at the end of the month while I am at the Vermont show!

  2. So happy to hear you had a friend visit. Oh how I wish I could knuckle down and really pare down! It is so enticing to me, but takes decision making and box packing and deciding what to actually do with everything...a little at a time.
I'm so happy that you'll have your own place soon and some more of your quilting things. Your quilting looks great. Hand quilting is so comforting.

  3. I love the little applique detail in your first photo. It was good you thought ahead to take the Winding Ways quilt with you -- for comfort, for home, for warmth. It's delightful.
Congratulations on finding an apartment. It will begin to feel like home when you can finally unpack, settle in, and put your quilt on the bed. Best wishes!

  4. Yes, having that quilt to work on while waiting must have been quite soothing in the trauma of trying to settle in. I'm so glad you finally found a place. Congratulations on the beautiful finish and please let me know if you need any help.

  6. So glad to hear about your apartment.
And, I'm totally impressed that all this time you've kept going on the quilting. I guess I'm similar in that I have to have my hand on a needle and thread at some point in the day or it just doesn't feel right.
