Churn Dash finish

OK I am really on a roll, finishing up projects.  August is over and I have met my goals, almost!

These gorgeous Churn Dash swap blocks from Fun with Barb.... what fun to piece these all together, randomly.  Any variations (eh hem) in size - sort of didn't matter to me - I just lobbed these blocks together and made this little quilt.

If you are a swapper and you are concerned about points matching up, I highly recommend this as a first step: frame each block in muslin, and then trim to consistent sizes. Some of these blocks were "off" by more than 1/4", which makes a big difference for sure.  I hadn't noticed until I was already piecing it, so I just pressed on and managed my expectations for accuracy;).

Machine quilted it simply, quickly, casually,  in a Hanging Diamonds fashion.  Monofilament thread in the needle.

I attached the binding by machine too this time.  It is ready for me to donate to our Guild's Comfort Quilt outreach next month.

Thank you again Barb and all the swappers!

  1. Love the look of the churn dashes side by side. I can see where Matching up points could be a challenge. But that's a great suggestion with the muslin strips anytime you have swap blocks. I'm glad you let it be what it was. Charming for sure.

  2. What a great finish! Who doesn't love a good Churn Dash block! Someone will be very lucky to receive this gem! And, I certainly do understand the accuracy problem. I get blocks for our veteran's quilts that are as much as a 1/2" off. Like you, I just lop off and know that some veteran will be thrilled with the result, cutoff points and all! Good job!

  3. The muslin strips can be the savior of many random swap block collections. This is a sweet scrappy quilt, and I'm sure whoever receives it will be delighted. Great finish!

  10. Churn dash is a favorite block. Simple settings are often the most appealing with these classic designs.

  11. I love how this turned out - especially bit about managing your expectations. This was the most challenging swap so far sorry there was such a variance, but in the end they all look great!

  13. Looks wonderful! I finished mine today as well. Mine were on point with a sashing so I didn't have to be too concerned about accuracy. Loved this swap.
