January mini - Flower Power

Making this mini was just pure fun, using scraps left over from piecing Paulina's log cabin quilt (currently in the quilting stage).

I really enjoy making these improvisational collages.  This one is about 14"x21".

I can't call this one "inspired by boro" but I did use my usual method -  I just freely cut, arranged, rearranged, edited, added, moved around, and used a bit of fabric glue to keep everything in place once I was happy with the composition.

I added sashiko stitching to the pot/basket.  Usually with sashiko you are very careful to smooth out your fabric as you go, but in this case I welcomed the ripples because I wanted that texture.

I sandwiched, quilted, and bound it today.   A nice way to spend a cozy day at home.  It's almost dinner time and we will be getting takeout.  So, a great quilting day, and no dishes.;).

The variegated background is a  Junko Matsuda fabric.

And the backing is a Kaffe Fassett fabric.

It will live here in my sewing nook for awhile.

I love the saturated colors and they remind me of these fabulous confident inauguration day women in their vibrant attire:

Check out all the various minis linked by Wendy on her blog The Constant Quilter.  Thank you Wendy!  You are such an encouragement.  It's always fun to see the variety of mini quilts.   (I'm going to have fun with the mini challenge this year, with no pressure on myself to make one every month).

x gratefully,

Cynthia

  1. Wow! I LOVE your new quilt. Did you really do it in one day, and from left over scraps?

  2. What a delightful pot of flowers! It is so free and festive. The cute bird is a sweet addition. I like the mixture of hand and machine stitching too.
Great photo of some of the leading ladies on Jan 20th. I liked the strong monochromatic clothes.

  7. Spectacular! This is exactly how I am feeling right now! Colorful and full of hope. I love your correlation to the inaugural outfits. I love everything about it. You and Barb have really inspired me to step out of my box and do some improv. So much fun to look at! Thanks a million for another great mini!

  8. What I love most about these delightful little collages is the way they invite you to imagine all kinds of stories to go with. I'm imagining a basket full of big valentine lollipops as seen through a screened window of a city brownstone ...

  10. I love it! So happy, such warm colors and great texture. Do you sew around the applique shapes' edges or the linear quilting holds them in place? [besides the glue, I mean?]

    1. Thank you Lizzy! I do not quilt around the shapes. I quilt three or four vertical lines, and filling in from there!

The purple ombré background and your straight line quilting are perfect for it and the sashiko texture too! Love the inaugural picture as well! That event made me so happy!
