New Hexie project... and a few days in Okinawa

A few weeks ago while on Instagram, some scrappy hexies caught my eye - and now I'm just hooked.  I'm just going to take my time making these random hexie flowers and then sew them all together.  They are BIG.  It shouldn't take years.  Maybe one year;).

I've collected bits of Liberty for years and I use it here and there in my quilts.  For this project I ordered some 2" hexies, some precuts, as well as a couple "lucky dip" bundles of green and teal,  from The Strawberry Thief in Australia.  My "rules" for this quilt (and rules can be broken) is that each hexie flower contain some green and/or teal somewhere.   Here is a good tutorial from Strawberry Thief.

Apples have nothing to do with hexies....

.... except for the fact that the cardboard basket they come in, makes a great organizer for my prepped hexies.  I sort of geeked out about that!

I even brought some hexies to work on during our little getaway earlier this week to Okinawa:

With cases of COVID rising somewhat in Tokyo we had mixed feelings about going, but we did it.  The hotel/resort took really good social distancing measures.  We were insanely careful the whole time and so was everyone around us.

Airport was all but empty:

We were the only two passengers on our little glass-bottom boat tour, so off came our masks:

Everywhere else, masks on, except when literally eating food (which was amazing).  This seaweed called umibudo - sea grapes - was something new to me (the other item is prosciutto wrapped pineapple):

Each morning the hotel brought our breakfast to our room (including green salad with cabbage and corn; dried soybeans in the cereal; unsweetened yogurt, fruit, juice, rolls):

A nice getaway to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary which is later this month.  We had been looking forward to gathering our kids and new grand baby Charlotte in New Hampshire for a week but of course those plans blew up.  Sigh.  So this was Plan B and I think really important for David to get *out of Tokyo* for a few days.

Farewell Okinawa, hello again Tokyo.   Grateful for health, employment, each other, our faraway family.

x

Cynthia

  5. I love your new project, Cynthia (hexies) I’d never heard of Liberty fabrics until recently, they really have a look of their own. I love them, but must avoid until I can significantly diminish my stash, or maybe I could find a small kit. I love how you repurposed those apple containers! I save all kinds of stuff for organizing/storing my bits of fabric.
So nice to have a getaway. You and David are a handsome couple!

  7. Liberty fabrics are so beautifully charming and using them for hexies just shows them off so well. They are stitched without a stitch in sight! Amazing.
I would be thrilled with those apple containers, too. I do the same thing when a perfect one comes along.
It looks like this was a great time to fly. How far was your flight to get to Okinawa? A salad for breakfast is unusual for our western palettes. How about for you?
    Happy Anniversary!

  9. I imagine it was quite nice to get away for a few days!
At one time, I purchased a few of the lawn fabrics but never really did anything with them. They were not readily available at the time. I gave mine away long ago. Now, with on the online shops available, much easier to get that type fabric. Your hexie project will be a good use for your collection.

  10. Beautiful fabrics for your hexie project. Maybe I would enjoy doing hexies more if they were larger. The apple packaging does make a perfect carrier for your hexies.
Wow--I've never been in such an empty airport--except in Dallas at about 1:00 a.m. :)
    Interesting to see the foods.
And I have to say that you and your hubby are better at selfies than my hubby and I are.

  13. Oh what a wonderful post. I did have have to laugh as I thought your hexies were like 1" or 3" finished. I really really like the big size and it will be fun quilt which will show your beautiful Liberty prints. Also great upcycling.

  14. How nice that you got away for your anniversary! I have never been to Okinawa though I had a chance when we were first married. Tetsu was out of a job, we had a baby but Tetsu needed to go for his friend's wedding. "Go!" I said. "It's too much money for all of us. We'll go someday when we can afford it." So... we could never afford it and I always opted to go to California to visit my family rather than vacation in Okinawa.

Love the hexies. I think I have some of those cardboard patterns but I've never tried my hand. The Liberty fabrics are beautiful!
