Shenandoah Valley Botanical month five - yellow pink tulip

Here's my block for February... looking a little asymmetrical.  I am being fairly loosey goosey with the pattern.

Background color is more like it appears here:

I keep the plan posted at my ironing board:

Lots of beautiful examples being posted here on the linkup.  Many quilters are doing hand applique which is just exquisite!

In other news, the weather has been wild around here and we've gotten some huge snow.  Here are two cozy views of the house - the front-front as we call it (we don't use that front door - it probably hasn't been opened in 100 years):

and the "side" - which is another "front" actually:

The original house was built in the 1740's; about 10 years later, it was sold.  The new owners likely dismantled their previous house and reassembled it as an attachment to the new structure - a common practice in the day.  I love the orange (pumpkin colored) door but we mainly use the back kitchen door...

Now the snow is all but melted away....

  1. In the States I lived my whole life in old houses and every one of them had been jerry-rigged at one time or another. Yours looks so roomy from the outside and I am glad I don't have to shovel snow to get there. Very pretty block. I have been drawing up a collection of blocks for some time down the road.

    1. Most of the snow has melted at this point and hopefully we won't get too much more! This house has so many quirks and difficulties but we do love it!

  4. Beautiful block and I love your house! I had to smile at the 'front-front' as I have a blogger friend in New Hampshire and recall a post where she'd showed a beautiful older home with a lovely door and front arrangement but explained that New Englanders never use the front door :)

    1. Thank you Deb! We New Englanders tend to be very practical! Our house isn't the most efficient, with its several extraneous doors and nooks. But, we aren't the first and won't be the last to inhabit and manage its walls;).

  6. Your block is beautiful! Tulips don't grow symmetrically so let them run free! Thank you for sharing your house photos. I love to see where others live. My house is relatively new (c1880), but I still claim that most of the dirt comes from the people before me! If I could get organized enough I would like to post a challenge to bloggers to see photos of their sewing space. Audrey (Quilty Folk) posted hers this week and I just love picturing where all my blog friends do their quilting.

    1. Wendy - we always say, our next old house has to be 150 years newer than this one!! I like your idea of posting sewing spaces and so I snapped some pics today!

    1. Barb - thanks for your kind comments. I took those photos precisely because the house has never looked prettier - in that light and with the snow.

    1. Thank you! It was the kind of snow that made all the neighboring houses look magical. We were all outside taking photos!

  11. Your house is beautiful. I love it's somewhat rambling look. And the yellow is a happy color. Love the pumpkin door, too. I imagine cleaning is a big job.
