wabi sabi city

Last day of August!  Can't let the month go by without writing about a chance encounter with a beautiful city.

Having been invited to South Carolina for a beach week with dear family, David and I found near Charleston for our 25th wedding anniversary...

David arranged a nice dinner out for the two of us... before which it poured rain.

It was actually romantic to walk around under the umbrella, and within minutes we had both fallen in love with this city!

 A "wabi sabi" city, truly!!!

Rain cleared, we had a nice dinner,

Took the requisite selfie...

Made a promise to return  (during the springtime)...

Meanwhile we had some nice sky views from the beach...

Nice beach walks... and I've never seen so many shells... so pretty.... I'm not a big beach person (irrational fear of crabs, which seem like huge sharp spiders to me, popping out of the sand) or of the heat and humidity, but who can resist the open sky, the sound of the waves on the beach...

I love the color and texture of these shells...

And the sweetgrass basket I bought as a souvenir... a little Southern "wabi" goodness to carry back to Mass.  It doesn't have patina yet, but it will stand the test of time, it is handwoven from natural materials in a centuries-old tradition.  It represents local craft.

Wabi (or wabi sabi) is impossible to define, but you know it when you see it...

  3. Looks like a good place to go again. Buildings and plantings are charming and I don't mind crabs ... they're going to run away from scary people anyway.
